FLOORING

What is the Tile PEI Rating?

My husband and I are shopping for new flooring for our remodeling and I noticed that all of the ceramic tile we look at has something called a P.E.I. rating. We did not want to ask the store and wanted to ask you instead. Are these ratings something that we must take into consideration.

MaryAnn, P.E.I. rating is a rating that has been established by the Porcelain Enamel Institute to rate the resistance of glaz4d ceramic tile to visible surface abrasion. This is commonly known as “abrasion resistance” and is the most common used industry rating for wear of the material. Ratings are from 1-5 and outlined below are the rating levels and descriptions.

PEI Rating 1 Recommended for wall applications only and not floors.

PEI Rating 2 Recommended for residential applications with low traffic areas such as bathroom floors.

PEI Rating 3 Recommended for residential applications of medium use, normal foot traffic areas.

PEI Rating 4 Recommended and suitable for all residential use and medium foot traffic for commercial use.

PEI Rating 5 Recommended and suitable for all residential and commercial regardless of traffic use.
