WINTER WEATHERIZATION TIPS Winter Weatherized TipsOn Ground Hog Day, February, 2012, Punxsutawney Phil, the world’s most famous winter weather rodent, saw his shadow which says we will have six additional weeks of winter. That is hard to believe when we are having such glorious weather, somewhat of an Indian Summer. Old Punxsutawney Phil seems to be correct about 40% of the time, so just in case he is right here are some winter tips.
Make sure you seal the air leaks around doors and windows and plumbing fixtures. Clean those gutters to prevent ice dams from developing which will certainly lead to roof leaks. Change those filters so your heating system does not have to work so hard. Contact a roofer to inspect your roof and check for flashing missing around your fireplace or other roof projection because these areas are a cause for roof leaks due to winter snow. Have your chimney and fireplace cleaned and inspected. Check exterior irrigation systems to make sure the water supply is drained and sprinkler lines are purged. Frozen pipes are a huge danger to homeowners during winter. Make sure pipes are insulted, especially in a crawl space as well as in the attic. Use heat tape to wrap pipes and if you have a fire sprinkler system, inspect the piping to make sure it is insulated. Last winter there were several sprinkler bursts due to unprotected pipes. Make every effort to keep snow on your roof to a minimum and let’s hope that Punxsutawney Phil is mistaken, and off beam with his prediction. |
